About

Digital Archive for the Yards of Tbilisi is part of the research “Unscripted Architecture. The Yards of Tbilisi.” The project explores yards in their historical traces, material dynamics and imaginative potential.

The project was initiated in 2023 by Duccio Fantoni. Since 2026, it has been developed into a website with Anano Simonia as archival co-curator.

Documents recording the Yards lie scattered across archives, libraries, museums and private holdings in Georgia and abroad, where they are held apart from one another and rarely recognised as records of the same phenomenon. This website gathers them into a single field of consultation, with two aims: to let the Yards emerge as a visually recognisable phenomenon, and to support future research by making the material findable and open to questions.

The archive holds no originals. Every item is a digital surrogate of a document that remains with the institution, family or individual responsible for it, and each entry records the holder, the author, the date, and the source of the reproduction.

Material is grouped in three corpora: documents from institutional collections; material contributed directly through an open call; and documents from other cities whose relation to the Yards remains an open question.

The archive is incomplete and under construction and will remain so.

Use of images

This is a non-commercial scholarly project. Images are reproduced at low resolution for purposes of study, research and criticism, under Article 70 of Italian Law no. 633/1941 and, for items of cultural heritage, Article 108 of Legislative Decree no. 42/2004. Every item is published with attribution to its author, where known, and to the holder of the original. Nothing here is sold or licensed, and the site generates no revenue. Rights remain with their holders.

If you hold rights in material published here and wish it corrected, attributed differently or withdrawn, please write to [email].
